Author's notes:

In preparation for this website, I went to the Smithsonian Museum of American History to take pictures from long standing exibit entitled "A More Perfect Union" dedicated to the experience of the Japanese-American during the period of internment. Much to my chagrin, the exhibit, a constant since its inception in 1987, closed in 2005. The last vestige of America's legacy of this period left in our nation's capital is a small monument, off the corner of New Jersey and D Street NW. It seems somehow odd that the decision to take down the exhibit would occur during a period of extreme xenophobia. Personally, I can think of no better time than the present to remember how the fear of xenophobia can adversely affect out nations ability to reason and make judgements. I fear that we may make the same mistakes, and can only cling to the fragile hope that our leaders and our people will not allow our biases to spiral radically out of control.
